Folktale Week 2023
Are you joining? Let me tell you why you should…even if you’re not an “illustrator “.
Let’s talk about Folktale week. This Challenge was created to encourage artists from all around the World to share their illustrations of stories full of visual storytelling and character creations.
Each day of the week (Nov 13-19) is dedicated to a separate prompt.
Here are the list of prompts for this year’s Folktale week.
Lost
Ink
Sea
Sleep
Underground
Illusion

Hundreds, maybe thousands of Artists and Illustrators post daily beautiful images they have created which relate to that day of the Challenge.
Many artists base their images around a traditional Folktale, and or they make their own.
Devon Holzwarth who is the founder of Folktale Week along with Jennifer Potter have been encouraging illustrators to share their passion for storytelling and every year for the past six years Devon & Jennifer have created such a buzz around this time that I feel that it would be a shame not to participate.
Deborah J.Stein who has a publication here on Substack - Sometimes a Ghost and also runs Story Camp Disco, has created a Companion Guide to Folktale week which I just purchased as a friend (thanks Julie) highly recommended it. (I’ll come back and edit my post with updates)
The community has grown immensely and in these past years and artists & illustrators have been invited to help host Folktale week. They are fantastic at sharing the community’s hundreds and thousands of images which are posted during that week.
Here are links to the hosts with are involved this year, some of the hosts have Substacks and some I will link to their Instagram accounts. Remember to tag them in your posts when sharing your illustrations for the week of Folktale week.
Deborah J. Stein also Story Camp Disco
And last but not least Margaux Kent
Also, I would head to their ⬆️ pages and follow them… making connections is why we have social media. I know I’ll discover new illustrators and artists that week and I’m really looking forward to it!
I WILL be doing morning LIVES on my IG stories at 6am est just for half an hour to show you my process. Come and watch, let me know what you’re doing, and IF you want to join me on my LIVE please reach out and we can keep each other company and chat about our process and stories.
Let me know in the comments IF YOU are joining Folktale Week and add your IG URL so we can all follow you…or if you have a Substack… we’ll make sure to subscribe.
Have a great week everyone. It’s wet and all the leaves are dropping… this is a photo I took before writing this post. LOOK at those pretty colours, and cute Piper (our pup)

I love your folktale art and those leaves are 😍!
I’m definitely in. The question is whether I can make it. I failed miserably at producing an imaginative and narrative page a day for scbwiartober. Some prompts were definitely out of my reach and interests. So I’m hoping it’ll be better here.
I have a story written down, my scenes sketched, and I’m putting together my palette.
I don’t think I can wait for the actual week to make my spreads, but we’ll see how far along I am at the beginning of the week. I’ll definitely be joining you in the lives !
